- Job PostingsLaboratory-Reference Full-Time Technical Beaumont Center, Lexington, KY, US Kentucky Blood Center is seeking a qualified medical technologist to perform and interpret serological procedures on specimens submitted for compatibility testing. This position also acts as an expert problem solver, and will resolve issues related to antibodies, blood typing, and cross-matching. The role regularly interacts with hospital laboratories, helping them find answers, and communicating findings. $2,500 Sign-On Bonus (after 90-days). Schedule: Monday-Friday 11:00pm-7:30am with on-call rotation. Training: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm for up to 6 months Essential Job Duties • Proficiently and accurately fulfills laboratory functions onsite with minimal supervision. • Provides rotational on-call coverage for patient serological investigations and other department requests outside of business hours (evenings, weekends, holidays); complies with related policies. • Resolves typing, antibody, and crossmatch issues and discrepancies on donor units; assists in ensuring transfusion recipient safety on samples referred by health care establishments. • Investigates platelet transfusion refractoriness issues. • Utilizes appropriate testing and matching criteria. • Selects compatible donors for patients requiring HLA-matched platelet products. • Performs special testing as required to monitor donor and recipient safety. • Maintains department inventory (includes reagents, special antisera items, and other laboratory supplies). • Responsible for the operation, maintenance and quality control of equipment used for testing and handling of all specimens, including daily workstation use and temperature monitoring for freezers and refrigerators. • Serves as consultant to laboratory and medical personnel seeking advice concerning safe transfusion of patients. • Helps to ensure quality of work by reviewing test results, reports, audits and quality control results as designated. • Assists in the development, analysis, and revision of SOPs; reads and incorporates into work practices. • Participates in continuing education activities such as attendance at conferences and meetings, monitoring industry publications, and remaining current on trends and best practices. • Participates in and supports research projects requested by the Medical Director. • Composes a concise Reference Laboratory Report for all patient specimens worked up and for donor testing, as required. • Maintains, files, and stores all department records, and assists with audits and quality assurance. Work Environment: This position regularly involves the following: • Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. • Occasionally fulfill basic clerical duties (typing/writing). • Occasionally lift/carry up to 35 pounds without assistance. • Occasionally bend or reach to perform various job tasks. • Analyze complex situations and make sound decisions. • Adapt to changing priorities and work under pressure. • Visually differentiate and identify specific colors, and various shades. Qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, highly preferred. • Undergrad degree in Biology may suffice with the appropriate combination of certification credential and experience. • Professional Certification - MT (ASCP), CLS(ASCP), or other equivalent qualifications, preferred (required for Biology majors). • BB(ASCP) or SBB(ASCP) Certification is a plus. • Laboratory experience including blood group serology, blood banking, or transfusion medicine. • MS Office and Adobe proficiency with the ability to navigate and enter data in web applications and custom systems. • Proof of education must be provided during the interview process.
